Sometimes you just need to stop listening to the noise and have a few quotes, stories, ideas, or words that truly speak to you. These are words that ground you and remind you of why you feel how you feel or do what you do.
When it comes to your body and what you put into it, there should be some inspiration there as well. Eating can often be a thoughtless task that is done in a speedy manner without caring what it is or how it might affect you. If you need a guide or just some words to remind yourself that what you eat really does matter and really does affect how you feel, then here are a few of my favorite quotes to put things into perspective.
I don't know who originally said these quotes or I would gladly give them credit, but here they are:
"Progress over perfection"
When it comes to most things in life you will never achieve perfection - and that is perfectly fine. You don't always need to be perfect. It isn't a matter of pushing yourself to a breaking point, it is the matter of practicing and trying until you get to where you want to be. It is all about making progress. Don't beat yourself up if you take longer than someone to do something or achieve a goal. Just try and keep trying. Take steps to get there and don't give up. Figure out what you need to work on when it comes to food. Make a list. Go through that list and prioritize then start picking away at the easier tasks. Once you make progress, move on to the next one. If you take a step back, so what. Take a breath and start again.
"You can't exercise your way out of a bad diet"
You can't. I know, I know. It isn't what you want to hear but no amount of exercise can eliminate most of the cholesterol, fats, and sugars that are ingested with the typical Western American diet. Your diet also has to change in order to fix this. It is a combination of diet, exercise, good sleep habits, and doing the best you can for your mental health. We can go pretty deep into the ins and outs of this stuff but to keep it simple and stick to the essence of the quote...you can't eat what you want and think exercise will fix it. If only, right!?
"Diversity is key in a plant-based diet"
Eat a variety of plant foods. I can't stress this enough. All plant foods contain different nutrients - various vitamins and minerals that your body needs. Each of these plant foods feed the millions and billions of microbiota that make you who you are. If you don't feed some of them, they won't exist anymore. You want them all to survive and thrive. The healthier they are - the healthier you are. So feed them ALL.
Eat the rainbow.
Get curious and try new things.
Have fun with it.
Eat various vegetables, fruits, herbs, beans, legumes, grains, nuts, and seeds.
I think you get my point. I'm not saying you have to force feed yourself something you absolutely hate and definitely not foods you are allergic to. I'm saying that variety is key.
